Vadio's winemaker, Luis Patrao is doing it right! In 2017 Vadio was awarded Wine & Spirits Magazine’s top 100 wineries in the world. Luis founded Vadio in 2005 with his family’s small 1.2 acre vineyard in Bairrada. He brought on his father to farm the grapes and rehabbed an old rural pharmacy as his winery.
Bairrada, close to the Atlantic, is known for sparkling wine and suckling pig. The average vineyard size is a mere .05 acre. For decades, about 17,000 of the region’s 50,000 acres of vines have been abandoned by younger generations who inherited the land yet choose to live in the city. Young winemakers like Luis are seizing the opportunity to acquire vines and make the classic still and sparkling wines that rarely leave the region.
The Vadio sparkling is made in the traditional Champagne method so it lends to a rich mouthfeel and notes of toasted hazelnuts and brioche. Grown from 30 year old vines, this wine is fermented in a mix of stainless steel and used oak barrels.
